Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
